Why can't a website just tell me automatically?

Because Reddit deliberately blocks it. Reddit doesn't expose a "you are shadowbanned" flag anywhere (a shadowban is designed to be invisible even to you), and it blocks websites from reading your profile status directly from your browser. The one method that always works is looking at your own profile the way a logged-out stranger sees it. This tool sets that up for you in one click and tells you exactly what to look for.

Ban vs. shadowban: what's the difference?

Ban / suspension

Public and obvious. Your profile shows "this account has been banned", you get logged out of actions, and Reddit usually messages you the reason. Can be temporary (a few days) or permanent.

Shadowban

Silent and hidden. Nothing changes for you, you can still post and comment, but the rest of Reddit never sees any of it. Usually applied automatically to new accounts that post links or self-promote too fast.

A normal new tab uses your logged-in session, so a banned account will still show "this account has been banned" there. A shadowban only reveals itself when you're logged out. Always use a private / incognito window for the real answer.

How to recover

If you're suspended, reply to the admin message or appeal at reddit.com/appeals. If you're shadowbanned, post an appeal in r/ShadowBan. Most automatic shadowbans on legitimate accounts are lifted within a few days. Going forward, the fix is behavioral: slow down, stop dropping links into every thread, build karma with genuine comments first, and give a new account time to age before you promote anything.
